Oncology massage (also known as cancer massage) is a form of specialised massage carried out by a highly trained massage therapist. It combines light touch techniques with adaptations in positioning to ensure it is comfortable and suitable for your changing body. It is suitable for most people impacted by cancer, whether you are newly diagnosed, are currently undergoing treatment or are post treatment and surgery. Massage sessions typically begin with short duration treatments to see how your body responds, before gradually increasing in time and pressure if appropriate.
Physical benefits include pain relief, decreased inflammation, improved circulation, and a reduction in chemotherapy induced nausea and peripheral neuropathy. Oncology massage can also promote better sleep, lessen headaches and improve your overall ability to tolerate the side effects of cancer treatment.
Emotional benefits include feelings of calm and relaxation, lower stress and anxiety levels, improved mood and sense of wellbeing.
When carried out by a qualified Oncology Massage therapist, this specialised form of light touch massage is safe to use and can form an effective part of your wider care plan. However, it is important to note that there are some contraindications which may prevent or limit massage treatment. When you book your first Oncology Massage appointment you will be asked to complete a consultation form. This provides essential health information to your therapist so that they can ensure your massage is suitable. This will be discussed with you prior to or during your first appointment.
Massage should only be used under the guidance of a trained therapist and with the consent of your Oncologist or primary care provider.
Oncology Massage offers a safe, gentle and effective way for you to relax and support your body throughout your cancer journey. However, Oncology Massage is typically not suitable for clients with blood, bone or lymphatic cancers.
When carried out by a specially trained Oncology Massage therapist, this form of massage can safely support your body and mind at every stage of your cancer journey, and has been scientifically proven to ease many specific symptoms and side effects related to cancer. However, there are some risks to be aware of before you decide if Oncology Massage is right for you. Your therapist will discuss these with you prior to your massage so you can make an informed choice. It is important to note that whilst there is no evidence to support the belief that massage can cause cancer cells to spread, it is still considered a potential risk. Speak to your Oncologist if you have any concerns about this.
Typically, you will book an initial 60 min appointment. This will be split into 3 x 20 min sessions taken at weekly or bi-weekly intervals. Once you and your therapist are happy that your body can tolerate the massage, you can discuss longer sessions.
During your appointment, you will be asked which areas of your body you would like to focus on. Your massage will include light touch techniques, and your therapist may use cushions, positional changes or a massage chair to help avoid any surgical sites, picc lines, stoma etc and ensure you are as comfortable as possible.
Your therapist will take care NOT to massage the site of your cancer.
